On the Rocks

Listening to 'Socha Hai' from Rock On on my way back made me pause and take a little note of the questions raised in the song. A little googling later, this resulted.

1) Aasman hai neela kyun - Why is the sky blue?
Light scattering. Light from the sun strikes numerous gas and dust particles present in the earth's atmosphere and the blue coloured wavelength component of light is scattered the most, giving the sky the blue colour. In space, where there are no gas particles, the sky is pitch black.

2) Paani geela geela kyun - Why is water wet?

Actually, it isn't. Water wets things but water itself is not wet. Water actually does not wet substances like fat and wax. The wet feeling is our sensation due to the attraction of water molecules to the molecules of other substances.

3) Gol Kyun hai zamee - Why is the earth round?
Gravity. Gravity pulls with the same force in all the directions and any variation from a spherical shape will lead to self adjusting corrections. Again, this is only an approximation. When the rotation of the earth is also considered, the centrifugal force causes the earth to bulge at the equator and shorten at the poles.

4) Silk mein hai narmi kyun - Why is silk silky/soft/smooth?
Texture. The 'silky' texture is due to the bonding of molecules in the pattern of silk. Silk fibers have a triangular cross section with rounded corners which give it its smoothness. They are also responsible for the shine of the silk material.

5) Aag mein hai garmi kyun - Why is fire hot?
Fuel is burnt. Exothermic reaction. Heat is released. Fire is hot. Duh!

6) Do aur do paanch kyun nahin - Why is two plus two not five?
Convention. I could decide to call 'paanch' as 'giggle' and it would not make any difference. It is just that 'two' countable things when put together with 'two' other countable things give 'four' countable things where 'two' and 'four' are merely our choice of nomencalture.

These are questions from the first stanza alone. After this the questions are rather simple like 'why there are lesser trees' (rate of afforestration less than rate of deforestration!) or arbit like 'why people fight'. With too much time on my hands, the above exercise proved to be a good time killer!

I'm aware Javed Akhtar's hunting for me now..
